| Rajinikanth was born on December 12 1949 in Karnataka, India. He was the fourth child to his parents, Jija bai and Ramoji Rao Gaekwad. His original name was Sivaji Rao Gaekwad. He lost his mother at the age of five. He had his schooling at the Acharya Patasala in Bangalore and then at the Vivekananda Balak Sangh, a unit of the Ramakrishna Mission. His mother tongue is Marathi, though he has not done many films in it. There is a famous saying about Rajinikanth in southern part of India, recited as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Rajini is a Super Star. Before starting his career in the film industry, he had to take up all sorts of odd jobs. He served as a bus conductor for Karnataka state transport corporation in Bangalore. It was during this time that he nurtured his acting interests by performing in various stage plays.A friend helped him to join the Madras Film institute where Rajinikanth completed basic acting course in 1974 at the age of 25. He started his acting career in Kannada in the movie Kathaa Sangama, directed by Puttanna Kanagal, in 1976. In Tamil, he started with playing supporting roles, beginning as a cancer patient in Apoorva Raagangal (1975), directed by K. Balachander, who assigned him his stage name Rajnikanth. After several villainous roles, his first positive role was Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri (1979), in which Rajnikanth played a failed lover in the first half and a do-gooder in the second. After several films in the Eighties, he played a Hindu saint in his 100th movie, Sri Raghavendra. Many others followed, among them dramas, comedies (notably Thillu Mullu, a remake of Amol Palekar’s Golmaal) and, at the end of the eighties, action-oriented family entertainers like Velaikkaran and Manidhan.Annamalai, which released in 1992, was the first Rajini film to gross almost Rs. 100 million at the box office. Unlike the eighties, several movies during his nineties were successful, like Muthuor Basha. At 53, his Baba released amid fanfare. Although the film grossed enough to cover its budget, it was viewed as a miserable showing and fell short of market expectations accumulating heavy losses for the distributors. Rajnikanth himself returned the losses back to the distributors who had immense faith in him. The whole affair cost him dear in terms of repute of making a comeback. Chandramukhi, a remake of the Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu. Chandramukhi was claimed as one of the most successful Tamil films ever as it ran in theatres (particularly in one theatre in Mount Road, Chennai) for over 600 days since release and still running. His next film, Sivaji: The Boss, directed by S. Shankar will be released in 2007.Apart from Tamil, Rajnikanth has acted in over 160 movies, including Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Bengali. He has also acted in a Hollywood movie Bloodstone in 1988. Rajnikanth was awarded the Padma Bhushan award in the year 2000 and was rated as one of the most influential persons in South Asia by Asiaweek. Rajnikanth has won the Filmfare Best Actor Award, South on 2 occasions. He is the highest paid actor in India and the second highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie ChanRajinikanth was requested by his fans for many years to stand in the State election of Tamil Nadu, but has consistently resisted entering politics directly. Though Saravanan had a sound knowledge about film due to his father’s presence, he had no plans to step into film industry. As his close friends say, ‘We were completely astonished to hear that Saravanan is going to make his debut in Tamil film industry’. First, he joined a garments factory as a merchandizing manager. For everyone’s surprise, his first month salary was Rs. 1000/- and he gifted his mom with a saree.
Directors Mani Rathnam and Vasanth had just met him at an occasion and called forth a photo shoot, which he took up casually. Well, a particular snapshot was about him putting his around Simran that he felt shy…. Then as he made his debut with ‘Nerukku Ner’, he happened to be the uprising star.
Filmography
His debut Film Nerrukku Ner was released in 1997. Directed by Vasanth, he teamed up with his college mate Actor Vijay. Actress Simran paired up with him. The very next year beginning had his film ‘Kadhale Nimmadhi’ where he paired up with Actor Murali. The film was released in January 1998. During the same year, his film ‘Sandhipoma’ was released in June. The very next year in 1999, ‘Periyanna’ had him featured alongside with Actor Vijayakanth. Again, Surya was casted by Director Vasanth in his ‘Poovellam Kettupar’ and it was the same film where Jyothika was introduced. Indeed, Director Vasanth was the matchmaker for both of them miraculously. Again, Surya-Jyothika paired up for ‘Uyirile Kalandhadhu’ that hit the screens where his father Sivakumar donned the same role.
Again, on Jan 14, 2001 both Surya and Vijay paired up for ‘Friends’ directed by Siddique. The film happened to the most stunning comedy entertainer with emotional factors. The same year Surya witnessed the greatest turning point in his career. Yeah! It was all about Bala offering him to perform the lead role of a different shade in his ‘Nandha’. The film won him the biggest laurels across the globe as hit the screens on November 14, 2001. It was a no turning back situation for the actor… His next film ‘Unnai Ninaithu’ again featured Surya together with Laila (she was the heroine in Bala’s ‘Nandha’). The film directed by Vikraman had Sneha too in the female lead. It was a poignant touch of romance and won awards for a good entertainer film. A couple of months later, his another film ‘Sree’ was released where he played an action packed mass hero role and indeed it turned to be a flop movie. During the yearend, his film ‘Mounam Pesiyadhe’ was released on Dec 14, 2002. Director Ameer made his debut directorial with this film. The film introduced Trisha to the film industry and Laila performed a cameo role.
And here comes the most top-notching films from Surya where every piece turned to be great grosser at box office.
‘Kaakha Kaakha’ directed by Gowtham Menon had again made Surya, Jyothika to pair and this was the moment when both of them became so closer. The film was released on August 1st, 2009 and within couple of months for Diwali another magnum opus ‘Pithamaghan’ was released for Diwali. Directed by Bala, the film had Surya and Vikram and won several awards…
On May 6, 2004, ‘Perazhagan’ had Surya and Jyothika playing dual roles. During the same month, another film ‘Aayitha Ezhuthu’ directed by Mani Rathnam was released on May 21, 2004…. The film had Madhavan, Trisha, Meera Jasmine, and Siddarth together in lead role.
And nearly for a year, he didn’t take up any projects….
On March 2005, ‘Maayavi’ directed by Bala’s assistant Singam Puli had Surya and Jyothika pairing up together…. The same year had yet another blockbuster ‘Ghajini’ directed by Murugadoss hitting screens on September 2005. Yearend was another commercial entertainer ‘Aaru’ releasing.
‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’ directed by Gowtham’s assistant Krishna featured Surya and Jyothika in lead role. The film was released on September 8, 2006. He took a long break after his marriage and joined hands with Director Hari for ‘Vel’ releasing in November 9, 2007.
